A CANADIAN KITCHEN CLASSIC. One of the landmark Canadian advertising cookbooks of the early twentieth century, combining hundreds of practical recipes with the promotion of Five Roses Flour. Recipes were selected from contributions by more than two thousand users of the flour throughout Canada, giving the volume some of the character of a community cookbook while remaining an elaborate piece of corporate advertising. First published in 1913, the Five Roses Cook Book became extraordinarily successful. The University of Alberta's Bruce Peel Special Collections notes that successive English and French editions brought the book into nearly a million Canadian homes. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: DESIGNED FOR THE KITCHEN. +++ Original illustrated flexible card covers, punched at the upper corner and bound with the original string tie, allowing the cookbook to be hung conveniently in the kitchen. +++ Printed in black and red throughout, with decorative headings, advertising devices and illustrations. Illustrated with color plates depicting prepared foods and Five Roses flour packaging. +++ Includes an alphabetical recipe index and advertising material for Five Roses Flour. +++ The preliminary leaf contains three detachable coupons through which additional copies could be ordered for 30 cents each. +++ The verso promotes Five Roses Flour under the slogan 'Not Bleached - Not Blended.' +++ Printed by Gazette Printing Company Limited, Montreal. Quarto, approximately 7 by 10 inches, 144 pages with color plates. CONDITION: Very Good. The binding is tight and square. Text is clean with light, even age-toning. Moderate shelf and handling wear, with rubbing at the spine tips and edges. Covers show expected light age and handling. Original string tie remains intact. CULINARY & ADVERTISING SIGNIFICANCE - FROM ADVERTISEMENT TO CANADIAN INSTITUTION. The Five Roses Cook Book occupies an interesting position between commercial advertising and the community cookbook. Although created by the Lake of the Woods Milling Company to sell flour, its recipes were drawn from thousands of Canadian users. The University of Alberta describes this approach as a form of 'participatory advertising cookbook,' in which consumer contributions helped create and disseminate a broadly Canadian repertoire of recipes. THE 1915 EDITION. The first edition appeared in 1913. This 1915 edition expanded the presentation with color plates and belongs to the period in which the cookbook became a fixture in Canadian kitchens. Library and Archives Canada specifically features the 1915 Five Roses Cook Book in its historical survey of Canadian cookbooks. FROM FLOUR MILL TO KITCHEN. Its contents extend well beyond bread and pastry, encompassing breakfast foods, cakes, pies, biscuits, puddings and everyday household cooking. The combination of recipes, product advertising, typography, package illustrations and food imagery also makes the book a useful document of early twentieth-century Canadian food marketing and domestic culture.
