The Upanisads are an integral part of Vedas, they represent a branch of the primordial Tradition and constitute the essence of Vedanta itself. The expression Vedanta (end of the Vedas) should be understood in the double meaning of 'conclusion', as the Upani ads are the last part of the Vedic texts, and of 'purpose', because what is being taught is the ultimate goal of Traditional Knowledge. The central theme of the Upanisads is the quest for the Ultimate Reality, they therefore represent Metaphysics in its real sense. This type of research is not an end to itself, for the Upaniads represent ways of contact and tools of realization; to this end they indicate a concise and complete sequence that concedes little or nothing to the analytical mind. The five Upanisads presented in this text - Isa, Kaivalya, Sarvasara, Amrtabindu, and Atharvasira - are commented extensively by Raphael. In his commentary, Raphael frames and broadens all the various points in the context of the traditional Advaita (Non-duality) teaching, and thus provides the western mind with the key to the comprehension of their symbolic, figurative, and analogical language.

About the Author

Having attained a synthesis of Knowledge (with which eclecticism or syncretism are not to be confused), Raphael aims at 'presenting' the Universal Tradition in its many Eastern and Western expressions. He has spent a substantial number of years writing and publishing books on spiritual experience, and his works include commentaries on the Qabbalah, Hermeticism and Alchemy. He has also commented on and compared the Orphic Tradition with the works of Plato, Parmenides and Plotinus. Furthermore, Raphael is the author of several books on the pathway of non-duality (Advaita), which he has translated from the original Sanskrit, offering commentaries on a number of key Vedantic texts. After more than forty years of teaching, both oral and written, Raphael is now dedicating himself only to those people who wish to be 'doers' rather than 'sayers', according to St. Paul's expression. Raphael is connected with the ma ha founded by Sri Adi Sankara at Sringeri and Kancipuram as well as with the Ramana Asram at Tiruvannamalai. Founder of the Asram Vidya Order, he now dedicates himself entirely to spiritual practice. He lives in a hermitage connected to the ram and devotes himself completely to a vow of silence.
