The Holy Family on a path through a wooded area. Etching and engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size (carrier) 218 x 170 mm., image size 203 x 155 mm., made by an anonymous engraver after Herman van Swanevelt (1603-1655), and published by Nicolaes Visscher (I) as print 12 of 12 in the series 'Verscheyde aerdige lantschappen', c. 1650. Herman van Swanevelt was born in Woerden, the Netherlands. He went to Italy around 1630 and was profoundly influenced by this trip. He is seen as one the major artists of Italianate landscapes from this period. In fair condition, pasted on carrier sheet, cropped within platemark. Damage in the top left corner, restored by mounting on carrier sheet (with a little paper loss in the image area), dampstained lower right corner, minimal paper loss in the far left edge. Reference: Hollstein 101: 4 (after Swanevelt).
