Reverberating with testimonies of God’s faithfulness in times of tribulation, Flight to Freedom is the firsthand account of a Christian family’s determination to do God’s work despite constant danger.
Come alongside Elena as she opens a window to the dark decades after World War II, when taking a stand or sharing Bibles became a path to prison. Join her on spontaneous missions of mercy to remote villages. Marvel at the strength and resolve of a young couple whose hopes often are dashed, but whose faith brings them visions of better times. Watch while God works even on the heart of a prison warden until a used car becomes the key to Vasile’s release.
In 2012 Vasile finally received thousands of pages of government files and documents collected during years of bugging and surveillance by the communist Secret Police. Flight to Freedom is more than an engaging and uplifting autobiography. It is an enduring triumph of the soul and a witness to the goodness of God.
Raised in Bucharest, Romania, Elena grew up under the tightening grip of communism. She became a chemist in a pharmaceutical factory, and married a photographer for the Agricultural Ministry. Her own father, and later her husband Vasile Rascol, spent time at hard labor under grueling conditions for daring to meet with missionaries and distribute Bibles.
Unable to find employment after imprisonment, in 1977 they left Romania with their two young children, staying for a while with Richard Wurmbrand's family in California. They returned almost yearly to Romania as Mr. and Mrs. Rady, bringing material aid to the suffering churches in their homeland, both under the Ceausescu regime and after its fall.
Elena and Vasile live in Washington state and value time with their local church and their children and grandchildren.
