Synopsis: Samuel H. Howard's mother taught her son that a good name is better than riches. Howard took that teaching to heart as he rose to success, influence, and authority. During a time when African American businessmen were rare, Howard thrived in corporate America, served as a White House fellow, worked in leadership in colleges and health care organizations, and founded and led several corporations. During his more than forty-year career, Howard also served on business, non-profit, and government advisory boards; led Nashville's Chamber of Commerce; and helped shape that community's Metropolitan Convention Center. Never relying on the race card, but often being the first African American named to various positions, Howard achieved success through hard work and ability. Eventually, the entrepreneur used a one-million-dollar personal loan to found a management company, Xantus Corporation, to work with TennCare, the state of Tennessee's groundbreaking health care program for its poor and uninsured. Howard soon found himself pointing out flaws in TennCare that had the potential to sink the program and companies like Xantus. Then one morning, Howard opened the newspaper to read allegations he mismanaged and stole funds from Xantus. The good name he had worked so hard to establish was questioned. The Flight of the Phoenix traces Howard's journey from Oklahoma roots to influential business leader and depicts his battle to restore his good name and fortune. It also tells how, like the legendary phoenix a bird that dies only to rise again from the ashes Howard is persevering and rising again, ready to soar as a businessman and mentor to a new generation of business leaders.

About the Author: SAMUEL H. HOWARD is chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Phoenix Holdings, Inc., a personal investment holding company. A native of Marietta, Oklahoma, Howard earned a bachelor's degree from Oklahoma State University and a master's degree from Stanford University. While working for General Electric, he was nominated and appointed a White House fellow under President Lyndon Johnson to serve as special assistant to United Nations Ambassador Arthur Goldberg. Howard served in leadership with Howard University, TAW International Leasing Corporation, Meharry Medical College, Hospital Affiliates International, and Hospital Corporation of America. He founded and led Phoenix Communications Group, which owned and operated radio stations. In the 1990s, Howard formed and chaired Xantus Corporation, a management firm for managed care organizations. Appointed to two national Medicare commissions, Howard is also past national chairman of Easter Seals, Inc.; past southern area vice president of Financial Executives Institute; and past president of the Federation of American Health Systems. Howard was the first African American in leadership for many national and local groups, including serving as chairman of the Nashville Chamber of Commerce. He chaired the Metropolitan Convention Center Commission; is a founder and director of 100 Black Men of Middle Tennessee; and is or has been a member of numerous charitable, community, and corporate boards. Currently, Howard is chairman of the Urban League of Middle Tennessee, Inc. Among the honors he has received are Philanthropist of the Year; Nashvillian of the Year; NAACP Branch Image Award for Lifetime Achievement; Distinguished Businessman of the Year; two President's Achievement Awards from the Federation of American Hospitals; and the Human Relations Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews. He was also named to two halls of fame at Oklahoma State University. Howard and his wife, Karan, reside in Nashvil
