[from Foreword] The Flinders Ranges in northern South Australia comprise one of Australia's major natural assets. The rugged grandeur of the ranges and their brilliant changing colours, magnificent gum trees, wildflowers, birds, fauna, flora, geology, clean air, clear skies, winter sunshine, history, tranquility and atmosphere have brought joy to the eyes, minds and souls of thousands of visitors - and this appeal will grow in the years ahead as our cities become bigger, more crowded and noisier. In this book Ronald Coudrey and Richard Lang convey to the reader by words, pictures and drawings some of the history and charm of the ranges and their love for them. Interesting information is given about the well known places but, in addition, there are also intriguing details about the little known places such as Nuccaleena and Artimore. There is good material, too, for the adventurous (but, I hope, careful) traveller who wishes to visit places further north, such as Innamincka on Cooper's Creek, Coongie Lakes (an ornithologist's paradise) and Birdsville. A visit to the Flinders Ranges should not be rushed. For maximum return it is a place to be savoured at leisure. This book will be a valuable aid to the enjoyment of your visit if you read it before you go and take it with you on your travels.
