Flood Control. This item is unavailable.Flood Control

"Flood Control" is a comprehensive examination of the technical, legal, and economic challenges surrounding water management and disaster prevention in the early 20th century. Compiled by Lamar T. Beman, this work serves as a vital collection of the contemporary arguments and data that shaped American infrastructure policy during a transformative era. The volume addresses the multifaceted debate over how to protect communities and agricultural lands from the devastating power of major river systems, exploring the efficacy of levees, spillways, and reforestation efforts.

Through a curated selection of perspectives and structured briefs, the work highlights the tension between federal and state responsibilities in large-scale engineering projects. Published in the wake of major national flooding events, "Flood Control" reflects the urgent discourse that led to landmark legislation and modern hydraulic practices. It provides a detailed historical record of the legislative and engineering logic applied to one of the most persistent environmental challenges in history. This volume is an essential reference for scholars of environmental policy, civil engineers, and anyone interested in the historical development of public works and disaster mitigation in the United States.
