Rapins Hortorum libri IV sind ein antikisierendes Lehrgedicht, das den zeitgen�ssischen Gartenbau in Frankreich als H�hepunkt der Entwicklung auf diesem Gebiet feiert. In den Plantarum libri VI l��t Cowley die Pflanzen als Personen in mythologisch-historischen Erz�hlzusammenh�ngen auftreten, ohne dar�ber pflanzenkundliche Aspekte zu vernachl�ssigen. W�hrend die Hortorum libri IV vor allem als Nachahmung von Vergils Georgica beschrieben werden k�nnen, nehmen die Plantarum libri VI literarische Techniken verschiedener antiker Texte auf und entwickeln sie fort. Die systematisch angelegte Studie erschlie�t die beiden im selben Jahrzehnt entstandenen, thematisch verwandten lateinischen Gedichte zun�chst inhaltlich; dabei wird auch versucht, die Pflanzen nach moderner Nomenklatur zu identifizieren. Die weitere Untersuchung gilt den formalen Eigenheiten der Texte; besondere Ber�cksichtigung erf�hrt ihr Verh�ltnis zur literarischen Tradition der griechisch-r�mischen Antike. Detaillierte Textanalysen lassen die Mechanismen erkennen, nach denen die Imitation bzw. produktive Rezeption im einzelnen funktioniert. Tabellarisch gegliederte deutsche Inhaltsparaphrasen geben Latinisten wie Nicht-Latinisten �bersicht �ber die umfangreichen Texte.
