From lower cover: Florida has about 2600 species of Lepidoptera, the order to which butterflies and moths belong. Most of these are small and dull-colored skippers and moths. But Florida has more than its share of the spectacularly colored, graceful creatures that most of us associate with the term butterfly. As Peter Stiling notes in the introduction to this book, "Of all life on earth, butterflies evoke some of the strongest feelings, most often admiration of their great beauty and grace" Our hearts are uplifted and we pause to think of the beauty that surrounds us whenever we encounter a butterfly. Florida, with its southerly location and its subtropical climate, is a wonderful place for butterfly watching. There are most of the same butterflies found in the rest of the southeastern United States, but there are also a number which are more closely related to the tropical species of Mexico and the Antilles. The Florida resident has the opportunity of attracting butterflies by growing the plants to which they are drawn for feeding and egg laying. A Comprehensive guide to creating a butterfly garden is included here. Also listed are the state insect collections as well as the new commercial butterfly gardens where visitors may enter a tropical butterfly world. Butterflies are not the only insect in Florida, of course. This book, designed to help identify some of the more common and visible insects of Florida, covers over 150 species, each illustrated by a color photograph taken in nature by the author.
