Go With the Flow: The Definitive, No-Nonsense Physician's Guide to Breastfeeding

A breast surgeon’s straightforward, scientific breastfeeding advice for your baby—the only evidence-based guide new parents need to navigate challenges with low milk supply, mastitis, and more.

Breastfeeding advice is everywhere—and much of it is confusing, contradictory, and based on outdated ideas. The result? Endless rules, rabbit holes, and exhausted parents feeling like they’re failing.

Dr. Katrina Mitchell believes we deserve better.

Go With the Flow brings to lactation a much-needed understanding of how the breasts actually work, and replaces myths with clear medical facts. Dr. Mitchell outlines practical, evidence-based guidance parents can trust, explaining the science behind questions she’s asked every day:
-How to improve low supply—avoiding unnecessary pumping and stress
-Why mastitis doesn’t require antibiotics if treated correctly
-What really causes nipple pain (spoiler: it’s not what you think)
-Myths behind “pump and dump”
-Why triple feeding is the road to rage quitting—and what to do instead

With compassion, clarity, and common sense, Go With the Flow helps parents shift the focus from breastfeeding “success” to breastfeeding sanity—prioritizing postpartum mental health above all else.

Trained in a rigorous New York City surgery program and later in breast oncology at the country’s top cancer center, Dr. Katrina B. Mitchell was headed toward a career in academic medicine. But after becoming a single mother who returned to work at five weeks postpartum, breastfeeding provided the lifeline to her tiny infant at home and resulted in a career-altering turn. Alongside her surgical practice, she began to build a large breastfeeding medicine and lactation clinic as well as to pursue further training to treat perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Today, she is the world’s expert on the intersection of lactation with surgery and breast cancer, and has authored over fifty academic manuscripts and multiple book chapters. She has lectured in Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia and is a frequent speaker with the American Society of Breast Surgeons. Described as a “force of positive disruption in the lactation world,” Dr. Mitchell uses her unparalleled breast expertise to challenge age-old misconceptions and advocate for change in the field. Her website, The Physician Guide to Breastfeeding, has become a leading resource for physicians, lactation consultants, and new families alike.
