Original paper covered pictorial boards, picture to front board is by Stanley Orton Bradshaw '36, it is in a pleasing condition with a minimum of wear to the background, colours clear, rubbing to extreme edges, spine has darkened, it has some losses but has been tastefully repaired, a biplane is visible but some of the letters in the title credits are missing, the repaired spine has a firmness that keeps the book tight and sound, the care lavished on this book shows that detirmined efforts have been made to keep things looking right. The spine shows evidence of the great attentention given to preserve the book. The pale background on the rear board is slightly soiled but still looks very presentable, there is a neat sticker fixed to the front paste-down 'This Book is the Valued Property of Mr Charlie Watts When borrowed - Please return Promptly, No. 21 Section Aviation. ' So this copy looks to have been in a collection of greatly prized books, another small label is fixed to the front endpaper very neatly listed & written by hand are the names W E Johns, G E Rochester and J Hamilton Pub/. The first two refer to contributors the Contents reads, The Understudy by G E Rochester; The Dress Rehearsal by Vigilant; Major Edward Mannock VC by W E Johns; Old Bottles by A S Long; Wings of the Night by G E Rochester; VCs Won in the Air, by W E Johns; Catapult Chariots by Arch Whitehouse; With Cobham to the Cape by W E Johns; THe Death Cloud by G E Rochester; My most Thrilling Flights -- Johns; Grey Shadow by G E Rochester. The articles are provided by contributors so are written by different authors some very well known indeed. The frontispiece 'A Bristol Fighter' is by Stanley Orton Bradshaw dated '34 the Title page opposite has a vignette of a fighter plane that has crash landed. At the top of the title page are the initials NF21 presumably a guide to where the previous owner could find this book . There are six full page illustrations in colour and four in black and white. All illustrations are present and in a very good condition, 248 pages with traces of foxing to the preliminaries and browning to outer edges of the text pages, this is probably due to the quality of paper being used. All the text is fully readable. A scarce book that is highly collectable owing to the popularity of the contributors and the superb art work. Size 9.25 x 7.25 x 2.00 inches approx. . Highly collectible. Would make a welcome gift for those who enjoy the tales of W E Johns or simply a great gift for general aviation and aviation fiction enthusiasts.
