Nehemiah was a layman turned leader of God's people. God's people certainly were not focused on the Lord's ways. The book is formatted to encourage both layman and leaders to get focused on the things of God and encourage others to do the same. The Lord's will, words, and wisdom should be the focus of all believers. Nehemiah finds God's people not focused on God's direction.

Throughout Nehemiah's life, he encouraged God's people to get focused and maintain that focus. Tragically as with most humans, there is the tendency to be focused for a while and then lapse back to a former state of apathy. The work of Nehemiah was to help God's people to get focused on God and maintain that focus throughout their lives. Nehemiah's assignment is the same assignment for those of us in the body of Christ. That assignment is to get focused on the things of God and then help other believers to do the same.
