Add to basketThis is a nice condition, illustrated copy of "A FOOL'S ERRAND, by One of the Fools; The Famous Romance of American History" together with "THE INVISIBLE EMPIRE - With Many Thrilling Personal Narratives and Startling Facts of Life at the South" by Albion W. Tourgee. 1880; Fords, Howard & Hulbert; New York. Illustrated edition with numerous full-page drawings. Two parts complete in one volume. "A FOOL'S ERRAND" is a fictionalized account of a Northern lawyer who moves to the post-Civil War South to help rebuild the region and promote racial equality. Through his experiences, Tourgee explores the challenges faced by those trying to create a just society in the face deep-seated racism and violence. The book highlights the difficulties faced by those working for Reconstruction and exposes the tactics used by the Ku Klux Klan to undermine these efforts. "THE INVISIBLE EMPIRE" provides a historical analysis of the Ku Klux Klan's violence during the Reconstruction era. It includes factual accounts of the social and political climate that allowed such an organization to flourish. Tourgee uses this supplement to solidify the claims made in the fictional "A Fool's Errand" and provide a more concrete historical context for the events described. Condition: Clean front cover and spine; there is a shallow 3" scratch line at the right edge of the back cover. Bright gilt lettering on the spine. Sharp cover corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the text pages are clean and appear unread with no notable issues found. Light tanning to the end papers and pastedowns. There is a name written in old pencil handwriting on the front end paper. There is a tiny tear to the paper at the right edge of the front pastedown. Overall the book is in Very Good+ condition.
