We came to a clearing and there under a tree was an arrangement of toy locomotives in the middle of nowhere. Pausing we mused, where are they going, where have they been?" -Alison Knowles "The work that Alison Knowles has given here is a personal kunstkammer-a treasure house of words and images that underlie an art she has made and taken with her on a journey through and over many worlds." -Jerome Rothenberg, from the Footnotes preface Published to coincide with Alison Knowles's exhibition (also titled Footnotes) at Emily Harvey Gallery, New York. Frontispiece by John Cage, preface by Jerome Rothenberg. Collage pages made from 30 years of Knowles's small red travel books were pasted up and redrawn, but in no defined order. The setting migrates from Japan to Cologne and back always to New York City. Ideas jotted down and friends' conversations overheard are a loosely woven context for these delicate pencil drawings. Designed by Julie Harrison with cover by Sara Seagull. Printed offset in full color. This is from an edition of 1000 copies, of which 26 lettered copies and six numbered hors commerce copies are specially bound in boards by Judith Ivry, signed by Knowles, and include an original signed collage. Wrappers edition, as new.
