Add to basketPaperback. She came to the Louisiana bayou to disappear. What she found will change everything you think you know about what lives alongside us. After a devastating divorce, journalist Mara Thibodeux inherits her great-uncle's remote cabin deep in the Atchafalaya Basin. No neighbors. No cell service. Just water, cypress trees, and silence. Then the gifts start appearing. Fish left on the dock before dawn. A smooth stone in exchange for a piece of bread. A turtle shell pointing toward a path in the trees. Someone - something - is reaching out. Mara, who built her career on asking questions, can't stop asking this one: what does it want? What begins as unease becomes wonder. Wonder becomes the most important relationship of her life. A quiet, powerful story about solitude, trust, and the discovery that the world is far larger - and more inhabited - than we ever imagined.
Peter Trappman grew up in Louisiana, where the line between what's real and what lives just beyond the tree line was never entirely clear. He learned early that the natural world kept secrets, and carried that instinct with him when he eventually made his way west to Los Angeles.
He was forty-one years old and thoroughly skeptical of most things when he met his wife. She was a believer and had a quiet certainty about the world that he found first amusing and then, over time, impossible to argue with.
He started paying attention. Then he started writing.
Peter spends his time the way he always has - on trails, in the woods, asking questions the official record doesn't answer. When he's not writing or hiking popular trails where strange things occasionally happen at the edges. At home, his cat Chuck supervises everything and approves of very little.
The story begins where the trail ends.
