Foreign Intelligence: How Humanity and Artificial Intelligence Will Forge the Next Epoch of Evolution

Foreign Intelligence takes you into the depths of the ocean to meet a form of intelligence unlike anything we recognize—and forces a simple, unsettling question: what if thinking doesn’t have to look human?
For centuries, we believed intelligence followed a single path, culminating in the human brain. We assumed it required a spine, a skull, and a centralized mind. The octopus challenges that belief. Evolved along a completely separate branch of life for over 500 million years, it represents a radically different solution to the problem of being intelligent.
In this book, Bruno Bianchini explores what makes the octopus so extraordinary:

• A body with no bones, capable of infinite flexibility and control
• A nervous system unlike ours, where most neurons are distributed throughout the arms
• A form of cognition that is decentralized, adaptive, and deeply embodied

Through real experiments, biological insights, and philosophical reflection, Foreign Intelligence reveals how octopuses navigate, learn, solve problems, and interact with their world—often in ways that rival more familiar animals.
But this is more than a book about a fascinating creature. It’s an exploration of a bigger idea: intelligence may not be a unique human achievement, but a pattern that can emerge in very different forms, under the right conditions.
As artificial intelligence advances and challenges our understanding of mind and consciousness, the octopus offers a powerful mirror—showing us that thinking can take forms we are only beginning to imagine.
If you’re curious about how intelligence works, where it comes from, and how different it could be, this book will change the way you see both the natural world and ourselves.
