Follow the course of U.S. international trade in both goods and services through annual time series data over the past five years or more. Exports of goods by state and metropolitan area are identified in detail. Countries or regions of export destination and leading export industries are specified for each state and for forty three major metropolitan areas. Unusually comprehensive coverage provides national-level detail on trade in services as well as in goods, and a complete balance-of-payments table is included. Data tables display annual time series through 1997 (1998 where available) and are accompanied by charts, ranking, and explanatory notes. Other titles in the U.S. DataBook series include: Business Statistics of the United States; Education Statistics; Handbook of Labor Statistics; Housing Statistics; State Profiles.
Reviews: Edited by the Chief Economist of the U.S. Department of Commerce, this work compiles data on U.S. exports and imports and related topics from a variety of government agencies, including the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the International Trade Administration, and the Bureau of Economic Analysis of the Department of Commerce. The introductory chapters explain the scope and contents of the data and also offer an overview of U.S. foreign trade. The first three sections provide data on the U.S. as a whole; the next two sections offer statistics on exports of each state by country or region of destination and by industry, and also similar data for metropolitan areas. All of the tables are in a time series (generally 1993^-1997, although the start year is different in some sections) so that trends and year-end changes can be analyzed. The volume includes a Notes and Definitions section describing the sources of the statistical tables and their availability. Finally, a detailed subject index provides easy access to the contents.
Well-designed, with lucidly written background material, this work contains much useful trade data heretofore scattered in many sources. All the sources are available free on the Web; but library patrons should appreciate having the information pulled together in a print volume. An excellent reference work for students, researchers, and economists, recommended for academic and large public-library collections.
