Item description from seller

Language: English. About the Book: - An account of the authors 4 years stay in Ceylon in his capacity as a coffee planter and the editor of a newspaper. In this book he aims to give an interesting and truthful picture of jungle life without exaggeration or false glitter. Recounted have are the life, scenery, inhabitants, costume and character of the people that the author spent his time with. The fauna and sport is lavishly described and the events in the jungle are vivid enough so as to sketch a picture in the mind of the reader. Along with describing the fauna, the book also takes the reader to several sites of historical interest; Kandy, Dambula, Anuradhapura are described, a 50 page note is given at the start of the 2nd volume. The last four chapters of the 2nd volumes is the life story of the Kandian friend of the author called Marandhan; it also tells the story of the British occupation of Kandy and the journey of Maradhan to Burma. An appendix at the end puts forth a theological discussion between a Buddhist and a Christian. About the Author: - Sir William Knighton, 1st Baronet GCH (1776 – 1836) was Private Secretary to the Sovereign, George IV 1822–1830. He was Physician to the Prince of Wales in 1810. He was also auditor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and from 1821–1830 was unofficially Private Secretary to the King and formally Keeper of the Privy Purse. In an almost unprecedented move, the King surrendered control of his financial affairs to Knighton in 1822, on account of his enormous debts. After three years, in 1825, Knighton declared that the King was free of debt. He had an unparallel influence over the King, and letters from the King to Knighton were addressed "M[y] D[ear] F[riend]," unlike the normal third-person that was associated with the Sovereign.
