Forgiveness meets capitalism in this razor-sharp satirical novel about America's obsession with instant gratification.
Ann Bauer's Forgiveness 4 You examines faith, doubt, and the hunger for quick emotional fixes in a culture that wants redemption on demand.
Gabriel McKenna, an ex‑Catholic priest, is quietly rebuilding his life at a small bookstore. But even there, strangers are drawn to him―unloading their stories, confessing their guiltiest secrets, and seeking the comfort he can’t help but offer.
One of these people is Madeline Murray, a high-powered advertising executive, who, hours after her weepy confession, has a revelation: If she felt so comforted by this stranger, perhaps there’s something remunerative to his consoling abilities. Madeline has a vision: a business that will offer a secular form of confession and forgiveness―the comforts of religion, without the religion.
Before Gabriel fully understands what’s happening―or whether any of it is morally defensible―Madeline and her team transform him into the face of a national forgiveness brand. A therapeutic revolution is poised to sweep America… until a devastating secret threatens to destroy the enterprise and the man at its center. And complicating everything is temptation itself, in the form of Madeline.
In Forgiveness 4 You, Bauer blends incisive satire with rich characterization and a sweeping American canvas. Written with verve, humor, and emotional intelligence, this ambitious novel offers a provocative meditation on faith, desire, and the price of redemption in the twenty‑first century.
Ann Bauer is the author of the novels Forgiveness 4 You, The Forever Marriage, and A Wild Ride Up the Cupboards, along with the culinary memoir Damn Good Food, co-written with chef Mitch Omer.
