Form Problems of the Gothic (Classic Reprint)

Gothic Forms reveals how northern moods and mysticism reshaped Western taste and space.

This study traces how Gothic architecture and its spiritual undercurrents influenced ideas of beauty, form, and the built world. Görlitz-like precision meets sweeping cultural history as the book examines the rise of Gothic mysticism, its effect on sculpture and ornament, and how northern sensibilities helped remake classical ideas. It contrasts the organic vitality of Gothic with classical ideals, showing how vertical rise, line, and rhythm express inner feeling and a new sense of space.
