Neepin Auger’s Discovering Numbers connects early numeracy with language learning by presenting number concepts in English, French and Plains Cree. Colourful illustrations give preschool children a visual anchor while the repeated three-language structure encourages comparison, recognition and shared practice.

The book places Plains Cree alongside two widely used Canadian languages and provides pronunciation support for adults and children who may be encountering the language for the first time. Counting becomes an opportunity not only to recognize numbers but also to hear and repeat words from different language traditions within the same early-learning activity.

This paperback edition is designed for children ages 3–5 and is suited to families, preschools, libraries, classrooms and Indigenous-language education. It combines basic counting, vocabulary development and Indigenous-language visibility in a straightforward format that can support both independent exploration and adult-guided learning.

Neepin Auger is a Cree artist, educator, and mother originally from the Bigstone Cree Nation in northern Alberta. She studied art for over a decade under her father, Dale Auger, the renowned First Nations artist and author of the award-winning children’s book Mwâkwa Talks to the Loon: A Cree Story for Children. A graduate of Mount Royal University’s department of education, Neepin is a full-time teacher who brings a unique authority to her acclaimed trilingual series, which includes Discovering Animals, Discovering Numbers, Discovering People, and Discovering Words. Her work is dedicated to the revitalization of Indigenous languages, providing vital cultural touchstones for children across North America. The titles in her series are designed to grow with young readers, available in multiple formats including board books (newborn to age 3), paperbacks (ages 3–5), hardcovers (ages 4–8), and ebooks. Neepin lives near Calgary, Alberta, with her daughter, Gracie, whom she considers her greatest masterpiece.
