Forms of Writing: A Brief Guide and Handbook, Fourth Edition (4th Edition)

Forms of Writing, Fourth Edition, is based on the assumption that good writing results when the purpose, audience, subject, and conventions of the chosen form are known. The authors focus on three main purposes of writing—to explain, to persuade, and to share personal experience—and show how purpose influences the strategies chosen in writing for a particular audience.

This emphasis on purpose and audience gives students a basic orientation that helps them understand the conventions of a wide variety of forms, such as personal essays, research papers, and business letters.

This edition retains the basic organization of the previous editions, with updated material and revised sections to make the book easier to use.
