Item description from seller

Facsimile second edition, reprints an 1886 volume. Forward and introductions by Jacques Dutka. Thick octavo. Illustrated, diagrams. Red cloth gilt. Very near fine. The original edition was used to prepare students for the "Mathematical Tripos," a challenging event given at universities to graduating students. The student prepared for their entire stay at the university and were usually coached by "Wranglers" to solve difficult problems under a time constant. This handbook is unique in giving not only formulas from many different math fields, but also indicating the derivation of the formulas.
