Fort Steendorp, built between 1889 and 1892, was a vital part of the general enlargement of the fortifications surrounding Antwerp, prior to the First World War.
It is one of the strongest forts ever built in Belgium and was the last one to be constructed entirely of brick, the crowning achievement of 8 years of military brick fort construction.
The fort was encircled and protected by a dry moat, unique amongst the fortifications of Antwerp.
