This is an impressive history of, and tour guide for, European fortresses, coastal defences, border fortifications and other military emplacements, mainly those of WWII, but with some attention also to the fortifications of the late 1800s when technological developments in construction and armamants saw many European countries develop important fixed defences. These factors are dealt with chronoligically up to WWII, for Holland, Belgium, France and Germany with the final section explaining the state of the defence at the time of publication. The second part is a travel guide dealing in detail with the location, access and condition of remaining examples. Holland and Belgiium are covered individually while five sections cover France, mainly the German Atlantic Wall, including the Channel Islands, with the borders with Germany and the Maginot Line closing the guide. First published in Dutch in 1986 with this Airlife translation 1988.This an ex-library copy. 166 pages, photos, maps, plans and diagrams throughout.
