New York. Three Fortune Magazines. 1. Fortune Magazine, May 1946. John McDonald's essay "Fly Fishing and Trout Flies" was an early glimpse of his work documenting the role that Theodore Gordon played in introducing dry fly fishing to America. John Atherton's fine double page spread showing artificial flies is remarkably and breathtaking beautiful. 2. Fortune Magazine, June 1948. Atlantic Salmon. McDonald's essay is titled "The Leaper. More Has Happened to Salmon Fishing in Recent Years Than in the Previous Two Centuries," features his essay on the Restigouche River. And again, John Atherton's double page spread showing Atlantic salmon flies is refreshingly handsome. 3. Fortune Magazine, May 1964. "Gone Fishing." This is an anonymous article on fly fishing along with color photos showing fishing clubs and their adjacent waters. The 1964 photo essay on private fishing clubs appears to have been occasioned by the closing of the Southside Sportsmen's Club in Oakdale, Long Island, and it was likely the last major essay about fishing to appear in the magazine. The three magazines are kept in a blue cloth chemise and blue cloth slipcase with gilt titles over a morocco leather label on the spine. The magazines and slipcase are fine and handsome.
