Grade 4-6-Several of the many and sometimes strange methods by which humans have sought to reveal the future are described here in detail sufficient to encourage dabbling in them. Famous predictions made to well-known historical figures are interspersed with accounts of more common, recent fortune-telling sessions and fictional scenes that represent typical predictions. Among the modes described are astrology, tarot-card reading, dreams, palmistry, crystal and mirror gazing, tea-leaf reading, phrenology, body-shape interpretation, I Ching, and numerology. The tone is skeptical of the reliability of any such method, but not harsh. An excellent glossary, a 12-entry bibliography, a finely detailed index, charts, interesting black-and-white photographs, and cartoon style drawings complete this appealing introduction. Margaret Baldwin's Fortune Telling (Messner, 1984) reveals more of the specific methods used in tarot-card reading and gives brief attention to additional predictive pastimes.
