Roberts had a distinguished military career in India: he joined the Bengal Artillery in 1851, served in the Indian Mutiny, 1857-58, won the Victoria Cross in 1858, became quartermaster-general of the army in India, 1875, commanded the Punjab frontier force, 1878, was created major-general and awarded the K.C.B. for his victory over the Afghans at Peiwar Kotal, 1878, defeated the Afghans at Charasia and occupied Kabul, 1879, conducted the celebrated march from Kabul to Kandahar which resulted in the pacification of Afghanistan, 1880, became commander-in-chief of the Madras army, 1880, and finally, commander-in-chief in India, 1885-93. …
