Lacks front free endpaper, blanks, and frontispiece, which is given in facsimile. With seventeen plates (of nineteen) with engravings (four inserted, the others are part of the pagination). Chapters include Overland Expedition to San Francisco, California After the Discovery of Gold, General Observations on California, Conquest of California by the United States, and more. Name in pencil on front pastedown endpaper (S. E. Severson of Racine, Minnesota).
