Oakley (1911-1981), of the British Museum (Natural History), developed fluorine-absorption dating of bone and was one of the three scientists who exposed the Piltdown forgery in 1953. By his preface, the book was begun in 1958, the Darwin Centenary year, at the urging of Sir Gavin de Beer.
