Engraved title, 11 folding engraved plates, and 5 folding engraved maps by Tirion (Brittany, Normandy, Provence, Languedoc, and Gironde). Small stamp of G. Brambilla to title-page in purple ink. A very good unsophisticated copy. Thomas Salmon (bap. 1679, d. 1767), historian and travel writer best known his encyclopaedic work the Modern History, or, The Present State of All Nations, which appeared in thirty-one volumes between 1724 and 1738. Described as 'an ambitious synthesis of travel literature and world history' (Okie, 101), it expressed an appreciation of foreign cultures and rejected travellers' tales of giants and sea-monsters, at the same time criticising the Whig government for not expanding the overseas empire.
