From 1927 to 1958, Walter R. Brooks (1886-1958) wrote 26 books starring one of the great characters in American children's literature: Freddy the Pig. The Freddy books, widely beloved as classics and deemed the American equivalent of the Pooh stories, are a remarkable achievement in children's literature. The books went out of print in the 1960s, despite their popularity in the 1940s and 1950s. Freddy the Detective (1932) is the 3rd book in the humorous children's series Freddy the Pig. Inspired by Sherlock Holmes, Freddy sets up his own detective agency. Freddy solves a series of mysterious cases, but then there is a frame-up. Climaxing in the great trial scene in the barn, where Freddy and Ferdinand the Cow are opposing lawyers with Charles the Rooster as judge. vii + 264pp. In addition to the Freddy books, Brooks created the character Mr. Ed the Talking Horse. Dramatic, humorous illustrations by Kurt Wiese (1887-1974). Kurt Wiese illustrated over 300 children’s books and wrote and illustrated another 20 books. He received two Newbery Awards and two Caldecott Honor Book Awards. Hardcover has teal cloth boards with black lettering and ornamentation on front and spine, in fine (as new) DJ. Carefully handled with square corners and sound gutters, the book appears unread. Minor shelf-wear. Dust Jacket has code 0298. About the Author
Walter R. Brooks was born in Rome, New York on January 9, 1886, and died in Roxbury, New York on August 17, 1958. Brooks attended the University of Rochester and, after graduation, worked for the American Red Cross and the Woodrow Wilson Foundation. He became associate editor of Outlook in 1928 and subsequently was a staff writer for several magazines, including The New Yorker. The short stories he began writing at this time were published in The Saturday Evening Post, Atlantic Monthly, and Esquire. Brooks's short story "Ed Takes the Pledge" was the basis for the 1950s television series Mr. Ed, but his most lasting achievement is the Freddy the Pig series, which began in 1928 with To and Again (Freddy Goes to Florida). He subsequently wrote twenty-five more delightful books starring "that charming ingenious pig" (The New York Times), all of which are now available from The Overlook Press.
Kurt Wiese (1887-1974) illustrated over 300 children’s book and wrote and illustrated another 20 books. He received two Newbery Awards and two Caldecott Honor Book Awards.
