Fredric Lieberman is an American ethnomusicologist, composer, music professor, and author. He is a music professor and scholar at the University of California at Santa Cruz, where he is involved in the University's Ph.D. Music program, and where, notably, he teaches and studies the Grateful Dead. He is perhaps best known for his role as the key contact between the University of California at Santa Cruz and The Grateful Dead, in finding a home for the band's archives at the University's McHenry Library and for his collaboration with Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart on three of Hart's books: Planet Drum, Drumming at the Edge of Magic, and Spirit Into Sound. He is a composer of music and has published several of his compositions. He has co-authored a biographical study of composer Lou Harrison and authored numerous other publications. Much of his publishing work has been dedicated to the examination of complex aspects of musical theory and the exploration of American, Asian, Javanese, and Balinese music, with a focus on traditional cultural music pathways and instruments.
