Bernie is a man in his sixties. He has given up on friendship, and he has given up on love. The two women in his life, Lilly and Rose, are as close to what he might call “friends” as he’ll ever get. But one evening, at Rose’s house, something as inconsequential as a movie triggers an emotional awakening in him that will change the course of the rest of his life.
Free Electricity is a deeply emotional character study of a man who later in life wages a battle against his staunch, Mormon upbringing, and the traumatic events that unfolded around his secret love affair with another male student at Brigham Young University. As Bernie watches the movie, the memory of young gay men tortured into heterosexuality through electroshock therapy, and the loss of a true, loving relationship, rushes over him. During this emotional breakdown, he realizes these scars have not healed, and it is finally time to do something about that.
Bernie’s is a story of loss—the loss of innocence, of love, of religion, and of faith in human decency; but more importantly, through all of his loss, Bernie gains much more than he could ever predict.
Ryan Rhodes grew up in the Mormon Church, fulfilled a church mission to Argentina from 1969 to 1971, and is a Brigham Young University graduate. He wrote Free Electricity to preserve the memory of those coerced into BYU’s electroshock aversion program and its resulting traumatic effects.
Rhodes is a designer and sculptor living in Los Angeles with his partner of more than thirty years.
