To Free the Rising Storm

What is more deadly: a power you cannot control, or falling for someone you cannot have?

Afflicted with a mysterious illness and mistreated by her cruel father, Mae Mordaunt's life has always felt like an inescapable curse. When the man she's meant to marry attacks her, she defends herself with a jolting magic she never knew she possessed—a power tied to elves and the gods. Desperate to uncover the truth before her father discovers her secret, Mae turns to the one man she's always felt drawn to: Varys Wynhart.

As an Elven-blooded scholar and librarian, Varys has been searching for the answers behind the ReEmergence of Magic, all while harboring a magical secret of his own. But the strange and beautiful woman who has always captivated him bears signs of something his years of study cannot explain, and Mae Mordaunt is a puzzle he is more than willing to solve.

As ancient forces begin to stir, Mae's power becomes something neither she nor Varys can control. He will risk everything before he loses her entirely—even if it means facing her himself.

Reviews for To Free the Rising Storm:

"A decadent feast for the heart and soul, To Free the Rising Storm is the spellbinding dark romantic fantasy debut from author C.N. Maxwell. Book one of The ReEmergence Chronicles transports readers to a world drenched in history to embark on a journey of profound metamorphosis. Maxwell pens a stunning tale of weathering the storm and being reborn into something…more. Love. Loss. Betrayal. Pain. Family. Fate. It’s dazzling and tragic in equal measure, and one of the best debuts I’ve had the pleasure of reading." — Amazon Review

"Magical, imaginative, and romantic as hell. To Free the Rising Storm delivers all I crave in a fantasy novel." — Kim Riot of the Reading Riot Podcast
