Some rubbing to spine ends and corners of boards, with some faint toning to spine. Light age toning to edges of text block. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, with his name in blue ink on front free endpaper. Penciled brackets scattered throughout text. Binding sound. This book contains the bookplate of Samson B. Knoll, an Austrian-born and German-educated historian who fled Nazi Germany and became a sergeant in the Intelligence division of the U.S. Army. Knoll was also a friend of Mildred Harnack, who was the only American woman sentenced to death by Hitler. Later in life Knoll was a history professor and the president of the Monterey Institute of International Studies, now known as the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.
