As well as riding in several races he was a fearless punter, winning a fortune after backing himself to win the 1973 Ely by-election at 33-1. Sir Clement Freud (1924-2009) was Liberal MP for Ely (1973-87) as well as night-club owner, chef, author, journalist and radio and television personality, featuring on Radio 4's 'Just A Minute' for over 40 years.
