Dedicated to Richard Le Gallienne. With Friend and Book first appeared on its own in 1889; the second part, though paginated separately, was not issued independently. On Lewis Morris, George Meredith, Poe, the seventeenth century Rosicrucian Thomas Vaughan, the rationalist grammarian James Harris, Philip Sidney, George Herbert and others, mostly in the form of dialogues supposed to have taken place in Rees' home city of Salisbury.
