Stitch-bound paperback: H 20.75cm x L 12.75cm. Contemporary blue paper covers soiled, stained, and chipped; white paper spine torn and chipped with front cover and spine separated from text block but rear cover still attached. Boldly written in antiquarian ink on front cover is "Secretary's office" followed by lighter ink writing "Levin Wailes | 18th April 1810" followed by second signature "Levin Wailes" in even lighter ink but with similar flourish; other old faded ink writing to front cover as well. Surface chipping to rear cover paper causes loss to antiquarian ink signature "Thomas ?" followed by old ink note "The role" (presumably the start of a longer statement) which by a different hand than the Thomas signature immediately above it. Front title also has "Secretary's Office" by same hand as front cover followed by "Levin Wales | April 18th AD 1819" with same flourish as front cover; towards bottom of title is same date repeated but by a different hand. Varied toning/foxing, soiling, and stains to interior leaves along with creased/curled corners. Levin Covington Wailes settled at Washington, Mississippi Territory, in 1807 and soon received land surveying commissions including plotting the northern boundary of the Choctaw lands ceded by the 1805 Treaty of Mount Dexter. From 1810 to 1822 Wailes was registrar of the federal land office at Opelousas, Louisiana Territory before returning in 1822 to Natchez where he was surveyor general of public lands south of Tennessee. The Wailes family hosted boarders at their plantation home including John James Audubon who painted several family portraits. Most prominent of the Wailes' nine children was Benjamin Leonard Covington Wailes (1797-1862) who served as state geologist and was professor of geology and agriculture at the University of Mississippi. Although with no markings as such, this book was acquired from the estate of Vicksburg, Mississippi attorney Lucius Bryan Dabney Sr., 1893-1967, whose insightful, ardent, and voluminous accumulation of Mississippi Valley-related books and papers is preserved as the Natchez Trace Collection at the University of Texas at Austin.…
