The Frontier

In "The Frontier," Peter King crafts a vivid tale set in the rugged and untamed landscapes of 19th century Australia. The story follows Ian Percy, a mounted policeman, as he navigates the challenges of patrolling vast, unsettled territories. Percy's journey through the harsh yet beautiful countryside is filled with encounters that test his endurance, wit and moral compass. His experiences, both solitary and with his comrades, reveal the complexities of maintaining law and order in a land where survival often depends on individual resourcefulness and community support. As Percy ventures deeper into the frontier, he forms a bond with fellow officer Bill Todd, whose companionship offers both camaraderie and a shared commitment to justice. Together, they confront the realities of frontier life, from the dangers posed by natural elements to the challenges of dealing with squatters and gold miners. Their interactions with settlers and indigenous peoples illustrate the diverse and often conflicting interests present in the expanding colonial landscape.
