Fulcrum Files

The dogs of war are howling as a new generation of brutal, authoritarian leaders tighten their grip on power… and begin to look beyond their own borders.

In Europe, Adolf Hitler orders the German Army back into the Rhineland – forbidden territory since the slaughter of the Great War ended in 1918.

It’s a challenge to the democratic European nations, but no one is willing to pick up the glove thrown down by Hitler’s regime. The French Army stays in their barracks, while the aristocratic British elite just watches from Westminster.

At MI5, Fleming White is one of a handful who understand that now is the moment to confront Hitler. Stalling will lead to a bigger, bloodier war. A war for which Britain is completely unprepared.

In a world of communists, fascists, gangsters and traitors, the ruthless spymaster begins to push his pawns around the board.

Ben Clayton is one of them; a former boxer and now an engineer on Supermarine’s new fighter, the Spitfire. Clayton is thrown into White’s maelstrom of mysteries and murder, treason and treachery. And soon, Ben Clayton must battle not just to survive, but to protect all that he loves and holds most dear.

The Fulcrum Files is historical fiction, a thriller set in the period made famous by Peaky Blinders.

What really impressed me though was the strong characterisation and plotting… Fans of David Downing or Alan Furst in particular should give this book a chance.

He's a former professional sportsman and also works as a broadcaster and journalist, writing for some of the world's leading magazines and newspapers, including Esquire and the Guardian.
Probably Mark's greatest achievement was hitch-hiking to Mt Everest base-camp in Tibet. In training shoes. Or maybe that was the stupidest.
