Functional Neurofeedback: An Introduction, by Soutar & Longo, is an entry level book, and the 4th book in the ISNR Learning Series. The authors define Functional neurofeedback as an integrative model of care that offers a client/patient focused approach to addressing disorders of the brain and central nervous system. The goal is to provide personalized client/patient-centered care. We recognize that each symptom or differential diagnosis may be one of many contributing to an individual's illness.
The goal of functional neurofeedback is to provide QEEG Brain Mapping for assessment purposes and brainwave training (neurofeedback) to address disorders of the brain and central nervous system in order to promote a healthy lifestyle. Not to just resolve a specific disorder. A comprehensive history and intake are taken in order to provide a holistic approach to the patient's/client's overall health care.
A pioneer in the field of neurofeedback, Dr. Richard Soutar has published five books on the topic of neurofeedback as well as a number of invited chapters and research papers and conducted workshops at conferences and clinics in the U.S and Europe. As a former professor of psychology and sociology, he has taught at both the undergraduate and the graduate level as well as a being a clinician, director and business administrator of various clinics around the country for the past 25 years. He developed the first internet training course for neurofeedback certified by the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA) and has been a BCIA mentor for over 15 years. He has served as Secretary and President of the Neurofeedback Division of the Association of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB). He is Director of Research and Development for New Mind Technologies where he is developing equipment, brain mapping databases and assessment instruments and software programs for neurofeedback clinicians.
Robert E. Longo, MRC, LCMHC, NCC, BCN, is a private practice neurofeedback clinician. Rob was previously a neurofeedback clinician with Cotton Grove Family Physicians in Lexington, NC; a neurofeedback clinician with Integrative Therapies in Greensboro, NC; and a part-time contract neurofeedback clinician at Timber Ridge Treatment Center in Gold Hill, NC where he worked with sexually abusive youth. Rob is an approved mentor in Neurofeedback for The Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA); and board member/President-Elect of the International Society of Neuromodulation Research (ISNR). Rob has worked in conjunction with Dr. Richard Soutar of NewMind Technology and NewMind Maps, in Roswell, GA, since 2008, and together with Dr. Soutar co-hosts weekly webinars. Rob is currently an Advisory Board for The Foundation for Neurofeedback and Neuromodulation Research (FNNR).
