Exploring the Furnished Room District of Philadelphia and its Social Costs
This nonfiction work examines how urban housing, poverty, and immigration shape a neighborhood once filled with private homes and now crowded with rooms for rent. It looks at the forces driving change, the impact on families and children, and the role of churches, schools, and city institutions in addressing the problems.
The author weighs crime, prostitution, and temporary unions against efforts to heal the community. It argues that solutions must start at home and extend through trained social work, stronger schools, and more responsive neighborhood programs. The text also highlights practical needs, such as temporary housing for working girls and reforms to restore dignity and opportunity in a crowded city.- How the district evolved from residential to mixed-use, and what that means for residents
- The link between home life, schooling, and social outcomes
- The role of churches, missions, and schools in addressing urban hardship
- Proposals for community-driven solutions, including housing and social services
