The Future of Work and Work Design: Research and Practice

The Future of Work and Work Design explores the evolving landscape of work and the need for redesigning both jobs and work environments. As technological, socio-demographic, and economic shifts continue to reshape the workplace, this in-depth volume explores how work design can respond to these changes. From the early days of scientific management, which focused on simplifying jobs for efficiency, to more modern approaches emphasising employee satisfaction and autonomy, work design has played a crucial role in organisational performance and employee well-being.

Taking an ecosystem approach, with insights from human resources, organisational behaviour, and strategic management, the authors offer a framework for understanding how strategy, culture, capabilities, and workforce composition interact at macro, meso, and micro levels. By rethinking traditional models, this book provides both scholars and practitioners with practical insights into the future of work and the skills, competencies, and capabilities that will define it.
