Futurity

Futurity is a devotional and didactic collection of verse and prose by E. Colthurst that interweaves hymns, parables, and moral sketches drawn from Irish life and missionary experience. The pieces address poverty, illness, mortality, and spiritual longing, urging readers to seek salvation through Jesus Christ and to practice charity toward the vulnerable. Several selections present didactic narratives: a rejuvenating vision in The Infant School; tales of Perseverance, The Convert, The Jew, and The Water-Cut; and solemn meditations such as Night Thoughts and The Cholera. Framed by exhortations to repentance, humility, and faith, the volume emphasizes Sabbath observance, Christian virtue, and the transformation of social conduct through gospel truth. Recurring themes include the mission of spreading Christian knowledge and the hope of heavenly reward, while acknowledging the complexities of faith in a religiously diverse Ireland. A historically illustrative, spiritually earnest compendium for readers seeking moral instruction and uplift.
