Printed in an edition limited to 225 solely for private distribution by the Officina Bodoni in Verona, set in Dante 12, 11, and 8 point roman and italic on Cernobbio mould-made paper. A think panphlet, Books Printed at the Officina Bodoni in the Melbert B. Cary, Jr. Graphic Arts Collection, loosely inserted. This copy is inscribed by R. Gordon Wasson on the first blank for "Stella" dated 1972. Fine in near fine slipcase. Title page in red and black (Mardersteig/Schmoller 139). Original text of the Gettysburg Address with a critical essay by E.A. Wasson and a memoir of him by R. Gordon Wasson. Edmund Atwill Wasson (1864-1949) was an Episcopal minister with a Ph.D. from Columbia who brewed beer, made wine, and distilled strong drink in his cellar during Prohibition, appropriate behavior for someone who had previously written Religion and Drink (1914). Officina Bodoni was founded in 1922 by Giovanni Mardersteig (1892-1977), who obtained permission from the Italian government to resurrect the old matrices of Giambattista Bodoni, the great 18th century printer. Most of the typefaces Mardersteig produced were based on 15th century Italian types, including Dante and Fontana, two of his finest.
