GOES-U Launch: Everything you need to know about the fourth and final satellite in the (GOES) – R Series

The GOES-U mission, being the final satellite in the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) – R Series, carries the weight of high expectations. The mission is tasked with providing critical atmospheric, hydrologic, oceanic, climatic, solar, and space data for advanced detection and monitoring of environmental phenomena. The stakes are high, as these data directly affect public safety, protection of property, and our nation’s economic health.

Challenges: The road to the GOES-U launch is fraught with challenges. The team has spent years building the instruments and spacecraft, integrating all the satellite’s components, and conducting rigorous testing to ensure it can withstand the harsh conditions of launch and successfully take up residence 22,236 miles above Earth. The satellite, the size of a small school bus and weighing over 6,000 pounds, must be carefully packed and shipped from Colorado to Florida. The propellant loading must be done very carefully as the propellants and their vapors are toxic. Moreover, the launch date had to be postponed to allow time for teams to fully repair and test the Falcon Heavy core booster after a liquid oxygen leak was identified.

What to Expect: The GOES-U mission is targeted to launch in June. Once in orbit, GOES-U will provide advanced imagery and atmospheric measurements of Earth’s weather, oceans, and environment, as well as real-time mapping of total lightning activity and improved monitoring of solar activity and space weather. It will work hand-in-hand with GOES-18, watching over more than half the globe1. The mission promises to bring a wealth of data that will significantly enhance our ability to monitor environmental phenomena.
