About this Item

Octavo, Hardcover. Important early anthology edited by S.S. Van Dine under his real name. Wright was forced by overwork to a long rest, during which time he read over 2,000 volumes of detective fiction and works on criminology (see Crime and Mystery Writers pp. 1006-07). Collects American and English stories and Continental stories. Includes Poe, Doyle, Freeman, Bramah and others. Long introduction on the Detective Story by Wright. "The earliest mystery anthology to receive high praise and wide attention was probably S. S. Van Dine's The World's Greatest Detective Stories, originally published in 1927 under the author's real name. This volume seems to have launched the custom of modern mystery writers as anthology editors, which continues to the present day." - Edward D. Hoch in Contento and Greenberg, Index to Crime and Mystery Anthologies, p. ix. Some dulling to spine, some residue to upper spine panel, a just about very good copy. (6741).
