Henry Leland (1828 - 1868) was a journalist who regularly contributed pieces to the Knickerbocker magazine in New York and other periodicals. He first published these humorous sketches in 1856 and they remained popular enough that they were published in 1870 in a subsequent edition. An good example of mid-19th century popular humor.
