Green pebble-grain cloth, printed paper label. Spine slightly darkened, some foxing of endpapers and prelims. New edition (first published by J. Wylie, Glasgow, 1828, second edition, Atkinson & others, Glasgow, 1832; this edition only traced by Library Hub at Aberdeen University Library), with the ownership inscription of J. Lewis, "at Inverness", 1849. "It has been a just subject of complaint with strangers who make a tour of the Highlands, that no easy introduction exists to the language of the natives. The following little manual has been composed to obviate this complaint; and it is hoped that by means of it, and a very little study, the intelligent tourist may be enabled to enter into the feelings and sentiments of the 'acute and amiable Highlanders,'" (in the words of George Baird, Principal of Edinburgh University), "at the same time that he explores the sublime and romantic scenery of their unvanquished country" (preface). "Co i'n té ud?' = "What woman is you?"; "Thoir h-ugainn leth bhodach" = "Fetch us a half mutchkin"; "Na h-òl deur" = "Do not drink a drop". Born in Fort William, John Munro (1794-1870) was a schoolmaster, first at Carradale in Kintyre and then for many years at Kilmonivaig a few miles north-east of Fort William; he also published A Practical Grammar of the Scottish Gaelic (1835).
